White Lily Flour for soft, light biscuits!

White Lily Flour was not on the shopping list when I visited a brand new "Fresh Market" grocery store that had just opened in our area. The store itself was just plain beautiful. As you walk around, one section is more lovely than the next. No high shelving here to interrupt sightlines, just one magnificent display of food after another. Then I saw it - the package that no other area grocers carried....

The bag itself was very nicely designed, with a sort of old-fashioned black and gold script on a pure white background. This was enriched, bleached and all-purpose flour, made from pure, soft wheat. When I returned home, I immediately made a batch of biscuits.

That's 2 cups flour, 1 Tbsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt, 1/4 cup shortening, 3/4 cup buttermilk.

What a great recipe! The best things in life are so simple, that's a lesson we can all take to heart...

Mix everything together and roll out to about half an inch thick, then cut out your biscuits. Brush some buttermilk on top and bake at 500 degrees (that's hot!) for about 10 minutes, depends on your oven. Remove from the heat and top with butter, maybe add a dab of jam. Simply delicious!
