Rose muffins made from organic flower petals!

Rose muffins are not on everyones must try list, but maybe that will change with this recipe. It's taken quite a while, but flowers have finally reached the kitchen. I've read that more and more chefs are using them in their kitchens, as a way of standing apart from the competition. So since I had some dried rose petals and some fresh ones too, it was only a matter of time before I started experimenting...

I started with a basic sour cream muffin recipe from "The Best of Shaker Cooking".That's 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/3 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp nutmeg, 1 Tbsp sugar, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup sour cream, and 3 Tbsp shortening.

Sift the dry ingredients together, then add 1 Tbsp dry organic rose petals. Add the beaten eggs and the sour cream, followed by melted shortening. Mix everything together and spoon into greased muffin cups. Top with a sprinkle of sugar and bake at 450 degrees for about 12 minutes.

rose muffins plus buttercream frosting equals bliss!

Let the muffins cool, then top with buttercream frosting that has had a teaspoon of rosewater added to the mix. Now, for the finishing touch. Take a fresh organic rose, pick some petals and put them in place with a smoosh more of frosting.

These might be just the thing for Mothers Day or another special occasion. I'm going to keep trying different things with a variety of ingredients, hey - that's why I'm here!
