This Redskins Rye bread was made to honor the memory of Sean Taylor

The Redskins football family suffered a terrible loss this week with the death of Sean Taylor, Pro Bowl safety, number 21. His life was taken at his home, in the middle of the night, by an intruder. A senseless killing, a young life full of promise, suddenly gone. So what's a baker, who passionately roots for the 'Skins every Sunday, to do? Well, I made some hearty rye bread to resemble a football, got some brass numbers and lit a candle.Ingredients * 3 cups rye flour * 3 cups white flour * 2 1/2 cups warm water * 2 packs yeast * 2 Tbsp sugar * 1/4 cup molasses * 1 Tbsp salt * 1/4 cup cocoa * 1/4 cup veg oil.

Add all the wet ingredients, sugar and yeast to a large bowl, mix well. After 5-10 minutes, add remaining flours, cocoa and salt, mix some more. Turn out on a floured counter, using extra rye flour to knead for 5 minutes and reach good consistency. Place in an oiled bowl and allow to rise, covered, for 60-90 minutes.
Give the bread a second kneading and form into a football shape. Bake at 350 degrees on a parchment covered sheetpan for one hour. Remove from oven and allow to cool, or go ahead and cut yourself a hot piece of homemade bread and enjoy it with some butter. I didn't know Sean Taylor, other than watching his remarkable talent on display on the field, but we all need to remember that life is short and that there are no guarantees. He was living his dream as a new Dad and Pro football player and now he is gone. Let's all take a quiet moment and revisit our dreams and say a quiet prayer for those that die far too young.
