Elvis sandwich wins over teenager!

The Elvis sandwich recipe had a profound impact on our son's culinary taste. He still has a good appetite, you see our family just got back from a visit to Florida, where our oldest boy now lives - all grown up! Anyway, when he was still a kid, he fed himself with a little guidance from The King. Here's my wife Paula's recollection from a few years ago.

My sons' first culinary adventures were timid - microwaving melted cheese on his nachos or nuking cheese sticks on a paper plate. Then desperation drove him to seek expert guidance. He read a cookbook. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, my son chose a cookbook well-loved by my anti-gourmand husband. Yes, I am forced to admit that nestled between my well-thumbed Julia Child and James Beard cookbooks lies a slim tome that my husband purchased at a garage sale, "Fit for a King: Recipes from Elvis Presley's Kitchen." Breaking every known precept of good nutrition, Elvis favored fat as his favorite flavor. If it was possible to fry a banana split, I'm sure that would have been included in the book's dessert section. As it was, he did fry his peanut butter sandwiches, an innovation that charmed my hungry son. He called it the Elvis sandwich!

Away for a day, I called home and got an on-the-scene report from the peanut-butter-splattered kitchen. My son told me that he had discovered his new favorite food: fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Thanks, Elvis! The recipe involved whipping peanut butter and bananas into a smooth filling and then grilling the sandwich in butter. The conversation left me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I was horrified that Elvis had become my son's beyond-the-grave culinary tutor. On the other, I was immensely relieved. For the first time in 13 years, my son was cooking and eating - and I wasn't nagging.

I wonder if Elvis' housekeeper ever wrote a book.
